As this year draws to a close, many are considering the status of the job market in Austin. Texas’ capital city is among the 68% of U.S. metro areas that are working at a pre-pandemic level of employment. According to Austin Chamber reporter Beverly Kerr, the city has added more than 64 thousand jobs in the twelve-month span of October 2021-2022. This 5.4% growth puts Austin in the top ten of the 50 best performing metros in the nation.
During the month of September, Austin’s unemployment rate measured at 2.8% down from last year’s 3.6% outpacing the overall Texas rate of 4%. The Texas Workforce Commission reports that rate as lower than it’s been since February 2020.
In a national report from Stewart Title ranking the performance of cities with 1 million or more available jobs, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio were all in the top ten. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos MSA continues to lead the way, making the top place on the list with overall job growth of 10.2% between February 2020 and October 2022.
With so much growth and possibility, the Austin area is well positioned for a strong start to 2023.
