UT Austin Accelerates Affordability Efforts

Jun 2, 2023

Austin is the fourth fastest growing economy in the nation, according to an April 2023 Austin American Statesman article. And it does not appear to be slowing down.

To help off-set rising housing costs, The University of Texas is launching a need-based scholarship. With a community of over 70,000 people, UT Austin is the city’s second largest employer and is a sturdy source of population growth. UT President, Jay Hartzell, along with Allan Cole, dean of the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, stated that the University and other employers have a responsibility in ensuring the availability of affordable housing. Because of that, The University of Texas is accelerating efforts to make housing more affordable.

“… the University of Texas plays a key role in addressing Austin’s rising housing costs.”

The university’s 10-year strategic plan to reduce affordability barriers often faced by first-year Longhorns will have two main focus points: “lowering cost and increasing supply.”
